Madison
Born January, 2003
Rambouillet/Romanov wether
approx. 90 pounds
Madison is a mama's boy. He was raised as lone bottle baby and so didn't
bond as much with the other sheep as he did with me. When he was very
little he used to come in and have afternoon naps in my home office while
I worked. That gave him a very bad idea, which was... that he is probably
not, after all, a sheep. Almost every day I have to remind him to "go
and be a sheep". Until baby Rachel came along Madison would pal around
with my dog Sage; when Sage barked at the door to come in, two bodies
would come bursting in together!
He is one of the most friendly sheep here on the farm, and routinely follows me around, trying to go wherever I do (even into small spaces). During the winter he looks distinctly like a buffalo. Sometimes when he gets excited he runs and jumps pogo-stick style like a young lamb. Madison is extraordinarly affectionate and curious, and will win your heart.
Care:
FOOD
Being a wether it is bad for him to have much grain. He and the other
wethers get sunflower seeds as treats; they contain ammonium chloride
which helps prevent the common (and deadly) ailment urinary calculi. He
gets a mix of timothy, orchard grass, and alfalfa hay, and all the grass
he wants.
MEDICAL
Madison receives a yearly shot of CD/T and rabies. He is wormed every
6 weeks alternating Safeguard and Ivermectin. His hooves are trimmed every
six weeks, at the same time.
HOUSING
Madison can go into the barn anytime he likes, but he much prefers to
try to sneak into the house or the duck pen.
